Barbie: The Exhibition - Design Museum
A cultural icon for over six decades, Barbie® has continuously evolved to reflect and influence design, fashion, and societal trends. Now, a major exhibition at London’s Design Museum delves into this evolution, offering an extraordinary look at one of the world’s most famous dolls through a design-focused lens.
Timed to coincide with Barbie’s 65th anniversary in 2024, the exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of over 250 rare and iconic objects, spanning the brand’s history from 1959 to today. Visitors can marvel at a first edition ‘Number 1 Barbie’—the doll that started it all—alongside some of the most groundbreaking releases, including the 1985 Day to Night Barbie, which championed women in the workplace, and the record-breaking Totally Hair Barbie from 1992, the best-selling Barbie of all time.
A key highlight of the exhibition is its focus on Barbie’s diversity and representation. From the first Black, Hispanic, and Asian Barbie dolls to recent designs that celebrate inclusivity—such as Barbie with Down syndrome, the first Barbie to use a wheelchair, and the introduction of curvier body shapes—the showcase traces the brand’s journey towards a more representative and inclusive future.
But Barbie isn’t alone. The exhibition also celebrates her world, featuring her long-time friends Midge, Christie, Teresa, and younger sister Skipper. A dedicated section explores Ken’s evolution over six decades, charting his transformation from his 1961 debut to his modern-day iterations.
The exhibition will take place at the Design Museum from 5 July 2024 to 23 February 2025. Check the museum’s website for opening hours and availability. Due to its popularity, be sure to book in advance.
